Student leadership

Here at Wirreanda Secondary School, we offer valuable insights into the roles of our school captains and peer mentors, who play integral roles in our student leadership framework. Explore the responsibilities and contributions of these key positions as they enrich the vibrant tapestry of our school community.

This page serves as a guide for aspiring student leaders, offering pathways and opportunities for personal growth and development. Whether through active involvement in student council, volunteering for leadership roles, or participating in various school initiatives, there are numerous avenues for students to hone their leadership skills and make a meaningful impact.

We empower the leaders of tomorrow, fostering a culture of leadership, responsibility, and service.

2024 school captains

The captain team engages in student voice opportunities to represent and celebrate their cohorts. The school captains and vice captains run whole school events and attend community events on behalf of our school. The disability unit captains and the inaugural WAVE captain represent their respective spaces by sharing insights from what students in those areas engage with and identify opportunities for inclusion within the whole school community. The house captains lead house culture during sports day in term one, as well as house events and house cup throughout the year.

2024 peer mentors

The peer mentor team plays an instrumental role in supporting all new students who come to Wirreanda Secondary School. In particular they support incoming year 7s throughout the transition process, including attending and leading transition events, sharing their experiences of starting secondary school, and participating in the year 6 into 7 transition days in term four as well as the staggered start in term 1.

How to become a student leader

Students can apply during term 3 to be a student leader for the following year. Peer mentors need to respond to a range of questions in a google form, and captains complete a written application and also provide a written referee statement from a staff member. The process is overseen by the Wellbeing 7 to 12 Leader who collaborates with house leaders, homegroup teachers and current school captains to select the next student leadership team.

Once selected, students attend a training session where they learn about the expectations of the student leadership team, set goals for themselves and start to develop their leadership skills.
