Aboriginal Education

At Wirreanda Secondary School the Aboriginal Education team support our Aboriginal students with their social development, wellbeing and learning. We provide positive support and role models for our students to be successful and feel connected with their school, culture and community.

Wirreanda offers a number of positive programs designed to support our students including Clontarf, STARS, SAASTA and the Nunga Room. These four areas all sit under Aboriginal Education which is staffed by a team with extensive experience in Aboriginal education.

Our Values:

Aspirational, Innovative, Connected, Inclusive, Strong

Our Vision:

At Wirreanda Secondary School, we will advocate for and support our Aboriginal Learners to have the knowledge and confidence to be aspirational in their school and wider community. They will be inclusive, resilient, and strong in their culture, leaving school as empowered individuals who are driven to succeed.

NUNGA ROOM

The Nunga Room has three ASETO’s, an Aboriginal Education Teacher and the Aboriginal Education Leader. They help teach staff to develop and maintain relationships with Aboriginal students, parents and families, promote an Aboriginal community voice in educational decision-making and provide advice on the cultural diversity of our Aboriginal groups.

The Nunga Room provides opportunities for students to be involved in a variety of learning and wellbeing programs such as leadership training and YAASTA.

SAASTA

The South Australian Aboriginal Secondary Training Academy (SAASTA) works with schools to provide a unique educational program to support secondary Aboriginal learners. SAASTA enables Aboriginal students to access a culturally safe and responsive education program where curriculum is connected to culture and the community. Students are given the skills, opportunities and confidence to achieve in the areas of education, employment, healthy living and connection with their culture.

CLONTARF

The Clontarf Foundation exists to improve the education, discipline, life skills, self-esteem and employment prospects of young Aboriginal men and by doing so equips them to participate more meaningfully in society.

STARS

The STARS Program provides support to young Aboriginal girls and women to attend and remain engaged at school, complete Year 12 and move into work or further study. The STARS Program is based on strong, trusting relationships and provides a culturally safe and warm space where our young Aboriginal girls and women feel nurtured and inspired.
