Specialist Sports course

Within the Specialist Sport course, we support year 7 to 12 students to excel at school and their career through the avenue of sport and self-development. We nurture each athlete holistically and support them to be well-rounded individuals through knowledge and skill development to enable success in a range of careers. We give students unique opportunities to be involved in the community and gain a range of perspectives from elite athletes.

Who is the program for?

The program is designed for students who demonstrate interest, talent and/or potential in sport and want to spend time further developing and competing at a high level at school, club, regional, state or national level. This program is also for students that wish to pursue a career in sport through VET or university pathways such as physiotherapy, human movement, health science, event/sport management, sport psychology, physical education teaching, nutrition, sport recreation and fitness, personal training, coaching, and umpiring.  Students will have opportunities to gain leadership and communication skills throughout the program which will support them with all careers and to be active community members.

What does the program look like?

Students in the program will have the opportunity to maximise their development and knowledge as they will train and receive coaching within the school curriculum. Students will have the opportunity to engage with successful athletes, coaches and experts via workshops and excursions.

Year 7 and 8: Students develop awareness of the concept of fitness, basic sport nutrition, the specific demands of a range of sports and how to prepare themselves for performance.

Year 9: Term immersion at a High Performance Centre, Velodrome visit, Inter school competition camp.

Year 10: Workplace Practices at SACE Stage 1 subject,  coaching, industry experience coaching and event management at local primary schools, inter school competition camp.

Year 11: Certificate Three of Advanced Fitness (partial completion) and industry placement through a Workplace Practices at SACE Stage 2 subject, First Aid Course.

Year 12: Stage 2 Integrated PE (non ATAR pathway into Sport Management or fitness) and/or Stage 2 Physical Education (ATAR Pathway).

  • SASI testing
  • pathway liaison visit and pathway counselling
  • Swimming pool rehabilitation and injury prevention experiences.

Selection Criteria

Entry into the Specialist Sports Course is by application and a trial process which is conducted internally at the school during term 2 each year. 

The selection criteria includes: 

  • potential in ability/performance indicated through skills and fitness testing 
  • a high level of coachability 
  • a positive sporting attitude 
  • a positive attitude towards school and study 
  • a history of high standard behavior, attendance and social skills 
  • member of a club or school sporting team 
  • a suitable reference from a coach or PE teacher.

 

Subject Fees

Year 7 to 8: $200 (includes purchase of uniform, hat, carry bag and water bottle)

Year 9: $330 for uniform, Velodrome experience and camp

Year 10: $330 for uniform, First Aid Course, coaching and sport management excursions and camp

Year 11: $330 for uniform, certificate 3 in fitness (partial completion) and industry experience

Year 12: Individual excursion costs.

Expectations in the course

To be selected as part of the Specialist Sports Course is exciting. If you accept your position in the program, there are certain expectations that will help you to achieve your personal best in all aspects of this program which include:

  • remain in the program for the duration of years 7 to 12 to experience all advantages of the program. Students are required to commit to a minimum of 2 years
  • play a sport outside of the school for a minimum of one season each year
  • demonstrate positive behaviour and be a role model
  • attend all lessons, even if injured. Students will be able to complete alternative/modified/recovery sessions
  • remain motivated academically and physically
  • maintain a C grade or higher in all subjects across the year. Complete all required work and push to achieve your personal best. Students will gain support with this when required
  • participate in school sporting events and excursions.
